Giving Back Series: Hermosa Beach Chamber Lunch

File this bad boy under networking! If you're looking for a great way to connect with local businesses check out your local chamber of commerce. The Hermosa Beach Chamber hosts monthly lunch meetings for members and non-members to network at. I attended the March 8th networking lunch at Barnacles Bar on Hermosa Ave and met so many fantastic business owners and representatives as well as the Hermosa Chamber of Commerce officers.

The Chamber hosts community events in Hermosa Beach including the popular Fiesta Hermosa, one of the largest arts and crafts festivals in Southern California, which takes place each year over the Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. The Chamber also hosts the annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony, downtown Sidewalk Festivals, the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, a New Year’s Eve Celebration at Pier Plaza and a weekly Farmers’ Market which features fresh fruits, vegetables and many other local offerings.

There was a good variety of businesses represented at the lunch, I met people from the following companies: Sysazzle, ACN, Tire Pros, and Real Estate Agent Magazine. Lots of technical recruiting firms, executive team trainers, manager, small business owners, and magazine publishers. It was great learning about all these business that drive the local economy but what's even better is getting the chance to learn more about the people that work for and run these businesses. I chatted about international travel, the LA Rams, night swimming (in the ocean!), country music, playing for a D1 football team, and of course learning more about how to get involved in the community.

There's so much value in connecting with local businesses in your community and I know it can seem like a chore to bring yourself to attend networking events but start with some smaller ones and then work your way up. As an artist or as a small business owner in general is so, so important to be able to share your work or share your business and establish relationships.

Try to relax and just have fun...and don't forget what you ordered for lunch! I normally prefer not to eat during networking events just because I really like to ask a lot of questions and food can just get in the way but I ordered a chicken caesar salad and completely forgot what it should look like when the food came out. So the server brings out food and without thinking I basically took what she handed me...which was NOT a chicken caesar salad. Turned out I started eating a chicken teriyaki bowl which belonged to a really nice guy at the table next to me. Whoops. It's not every day that you go to a networking lunch and owe somebody lunch before you even leave.

Anyways, it was a fantastic event! If you're on the fence about networking - don't be. Just get out there and find an event that you can handle. Or if you're a pro on networking events I would LOVE to hear some tips and recommendations!

If you're interested in learning more about the Hermosa Chamber you can check out their events calendar here. Or if you're in town this weekend stop by for the Hermosa Beach St Patty's Day parade!
